Easter falls on Monday 13th April 2020 this year and during our lockdown (and the forecast looking sour) we have collected some fun ideas and creative things you can do from the comfort of your home to celebrate and create. 1. Brightly Colored Bunny Art Project (Courtesy of Projectswithkid.com)

Supplies 

Directions

1. Draw a bunny or use a bunny template and cut it out. Printing it on cardstock makes it a bit easier for kids to use, but regular white printer paper works as well. 

2. Get your black pastel paper or cardstock ready. We used pastel paper for one bunny and regular black cardstock for the other bunny. The pastel paper has a texture to it that is nice to work with but they both worked great! 

3. Tape the bunny down to your paper using some painters tape on the back. This helps to keep the template from sliding around and makes it easier for kids to use.

                   

4. Start smudging from the bunny template outwards in the same direction, continuing all the way around the bunny. Remind kids not to smudge the pastels back and forth, this will cause the colors to blend together and you won’t get the cool effect at the end. 

5.  Once kids have finished smudging all the colors, carefully take off the bunny template revealing their gorgeous work of art!

 

2. Bunny Funny Faces

Kids can easily make these bunny face stamps by cutting a paper towel roll into three pieces and then dipping them in white paint.

Materials

  • Flowers- Try bouquet flowers if they are currently out of season. 
  • Eggs- Dyed or natural- This looks beautiful either way!
  • Mod Podge– We used matte for this project, but also love the glossy finish

      

Step 1:

Press flowers.

Not all flowers are easy to press and dry. We did not have any flowers when I made these Easter eggs, so I bought some single-petal bouquet flowers. These flowers are much easier to press and also dry a lot quicker than thicker flowers with multiple layer of petals.

Once you pick or buy your flowers, place them between 2 pieces of wax paper in a book and close the book. Place a couple more heavy books on top and check back in a week

Step 2:

Put a layer of mod podge on an egg. If you are using dyed eggs, make sure the eggs are COMPLETELY dried or the dye will come off the egg.

Step 3:

Seal the flowers on the eggs with mod podge. Put the flower on the egg and apply a generous layer of mod podge on the flower. Since I put so much sealer on the flower, this will take about an hour to dry.

How to Make Peekaboo Clothespin Eggs

1. Start by cutting out a small rectangle of glitter foam, about 1.5″ wide by 2″ tall, then trim around the corners to turn it into an oval egg shape.

   

2. Cut a zig zag shape across the egg. I recommend drawing a line with a pencil on the back of the egg before you cut. You don’t have to, but it makes the zig zags look way better if you’ve planned them out a little bit.

3. Pinch open the clothespin. While it’s open, add a small strip of crafter’s tape to 3/4″ of the side, front edge of the top and bottom where the egg is going to go.

4. Make sure the clothespin is open when you add the crafter’s tape so you don’t accidentally tape it shut.

5. Lay the egg upside down on the table, making sure the top and bottom egg pieces are lined up and together.

6. Carefully press the clothes pin onto the back of the foam egg so that the opening in the clothespin lines up with the opening in the cracked egg. Try to line it up so that the end of the clothespin where your chick is going to go is in the middle of the egg.

7. Cut out a tiny chick shape from yellow paper or cardstock. Mine was about 1/2″ wide by 3/4″ tall.

8. Then use a black gel pen and an orange gel pen (or black and orange markers) to draw the eyes and beak onto the little paper chick shape.

 

9. This next part is completely optional, but I find it really helps to make sure your clothespin opens and closes easily without shutting on top of the chick and bending it. If you attach the chick right onto the clothespin, I find that wooden clothespin pieces shift and often end up crushing the chick when it closes.

So I recommend taking a tiny piece of craft foam (or cardboard, or anything else with a little bit of thickness to it) and using crafter’s tape to attach it to the back of the clothespin where the chick is going to go.

6 Paper Plate Bunny Ear Hat. (Courtesty of DIYnCRAFTS.com)

Materials

Instructions

  1. This first project is the simplest one involving the fewest materials. You can jump straight to the cutting step (see below), but I think it is easiest to sketch the outlines of ears before you cut them.
  2. Set your paper plate down in front of you. Sketch the outlines of two bunny ears in the center of the plate. The ears should begin not at the very edge of the plate, but where the rim of the plate meets the bottom. The tips of the ears should extend across the plate to the opposite side, also ending where the rim of the plate meets the bottom.

3. Once you have sketched the ears to your satisfaction, you can begin to cut them out. You do not want to actually remove them from the plate. Instead, you want to cut out the excess space around them on the bottom of the plate.

4. This would be very tricky to do using a pair of scissors because the plate cannot be folded in half without creating unwanted bend lines in the finished product.

5. So I recommend instead that you set the plate down on top of a cutting board, and use a precision cutting tool such as an X-Acto knife to remove the excess space around the ears.

6. When this step is completed, all that should remain of the plate is its rim along with the ears, which should remain attached to the rim at the bottom. Make sure that the points of the ears are detached from the rim at the top.

7. Next, use a pink marker to fill in the inner ears.

 

8. The last step is very easy. Simply fold the ears upward from the rim so that they are standing up straight. Now the bunny hat is ready to be worn.

7. Kids easy to make Carrot Cake! 

Ingredients 

  • 3 cups (400 g) of carrots, peeled
  • 3 cups (400 g) flour
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 cups (300 mls) oil (I use olive oil but sunflower oil will work too)
  • 2 cups (250 g) sugar
  • 1 cup (150 g) desiccated coconut
  • 6 teaspoons of cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 cup (120 g) raisins
  • 1/2 cup (120 mls) water (depending on consistency)
  • A large baking tin. (This is a big cake, large portions for 6 of us for 2 days.)

How to make 

I use a food processor to do everything. It’s super easy.

  1. Preheat oven to 325 °F (170 °C).
  2. Grate carrots in the food processor.
  3. Change the fitting to the ‘mix’ fitting and add all the ingredients except the raisins. Add the water last as you may not need it. You want it to be liquid but not too runny, like a soft-serve ice cream.
  4. Mix in the raisins (don’t use the food processor unless you don’t want them whole.)
  5. Put in your cake tin.
  6. Bake for 45 mins.

8. Egg Carton Chicks

Recycling takes on a new, adorable meaning with these chicks

Supplies 

  • egg cartons
  • acrylic paint & brush
  • glue, scissors, marker
  • construction paper

9.  A homemade play mat might make a good base for this play + construction extravaganza!

Or, take the idea outside, and make roads, rivers, and hills out of dirt, sand, water, sticks, and rocks.

10. Yarn wrapped Bee Craft

We at Honey and Cocoa just LOVE this one! Turn an empty toilet paper roll into a cute, yarn-wrapped bee craft for kids!

Materials 

  • Cardboard tube- like an empty toilet paper roll
  • Yellow  paint and paintbrush 
  • Black Yarn or String, (you can always paint white Yarn to black)
  • Scissors
  • Construction Paper (yellow and white)
  • Black Pipe Cleaner
  • Googly Eyes 
  • Black marker or crayon

Instructions

    1. Paint a cardboard tube with yellow paint and let it dry completely.

    2. Grab a long piece of black yarn or string, or paint a white piece of string black

    3. Cut a small slit on the bottom and top of the cardboard tube to hold the yarn. Place one end of the yarn into the slit. Wrap the yarn around the tube to form stripes for your bee. (Younger children might just enjoy wrapping the yarn without actually creating stripes.) After you’re done wrapping your yarn, place the other end into the top slit to hold it in place. Cut off any extra yarn.

      

    4. Cut two small pieces of black pip cleaner and glue them onto your bee body to make antennae. (You can use black paper if you don’t have any pipe cleaners.) We like to use quick drying glue or a glue gun so we don’t have to wait long for the glue to dry, but regular school glue will work too.
